Travels in Proverbs - Week One

During the next four weeks, we are going to focus on four great verses out of the book of Proverbs.

One verse per week.

As most of you know, Milan is having open heart surgery on June 18th.

Facing a major surgery like this we have had recent conversations about the preciousness of life, health, family and we find ourselves tending to focus on and speak about all we appreciate in each other.

Many verses in Proverbs are tid-bits of wisdom; “reminders” or “perspective setters” nudging us to move out of our compliancy and bad habits.

A Little Criticism Might Be Just What You Need.

Let’s start with Proverbs 15: 31-32:

“He who listens to live giving rebuke will be at home among the wise.

He (she) who ignores discipline despises himself but whoever heeds correction gains
         understanding.”

When someone knows you well, your weaknesses will become more and more visible,
they are going to be exposed to your weaknesses.  Throw a little stress in the mix and your best foot won’t always be forward.  Sooner or later a boss will criticize you,  a spouse will be upset with your behavior or attitude or your child will be the recipient of unfair harshness.

God says rebuke can be life-giving and make us wiser and more understanding.

So, how do you accept criticism?

Are you defensive?

Do you immediately feel unjustly accused?

Do you ask question to be sure you understand the feelings and experiences of those you are in relationship with?

How responsive are you to correction?

The truth is,  we all need it at times.

None of us are perfect and sometimes we just need to say something like… “  I can see why you would be upset with me.  Let me make sure I understand what is bothering you.”

Then ask questions.

If no one ever offers you criticism, feedback, or gives you advice, that is not a good sign.

It probably means you are not very safe to approach.

So, this week make it a point to ask your spouse, kids or co-workers, “What is one thing you would like to change about me that would make it more enjoyable to be around me?”

Take their answer seriously.  Ask them a month later is they notice any change.  God will call you wise.

Love and blessings,

Kay

One person who attended the seminar said: "My husband and I attended your weekend "How We Love" seminar. We were absolutely energized by the experience!"

The sponsor of the seminar had these kinds words to say:

"Everyone loved the material presented, the emotional intensity of the conference, and your transparency as a couple.  The real emotional responses from numerous couples were about how difficult things had been in their marriage and how you gave them hope.  This was especially evident in the prayer requests submitted- a VERY long list of submitted requests for their marriages!  One response said  “we felt our marriage was over and I really think we have a chance since we can better understand the sources of our problems.” I saw one praise of an unbelieving husband who came with his wife, and she said he was positive about the church, and of the weekend, and they had talked more that weekend than in 14 years of married life!
