Jesus Was Willing to Enter Into Pain…Are You? “Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.” Good to know that 7th grade science experiment on chemical reactions is as old as the bible! It is a great word picture of what kind of reaction can go off inside us when someone tries to cheer us up without being willing to enter into our pain when our heart is heavy. How comfortable are you when someone you love is sad with a heavy heart? Do you attempt to quickly fix it because their sadness makes you uncomfortable? Jesus took a trip from heaven to earth to die on the cross for out sins. You might look at it as a trip into pain. He entered in. Into hunger, loneliness, abuse, ridicule, rejection, betrayal, temptation, fear, and ultimately death. He entered the pain to offer healing. Are you willing to do the same for those you love or do you make it your mission to avoid pain? Are you uncomfortable when someone around you is sad, depressed, or grieving? I was talking with a woman whose best friend had recently experiences the death of her husband. “I’ve been avoiding her,” she admitted to me, “because I don’t know what to say”. I suggested she enter in and say to her friend, “I have no words to offer because I cannot imagine what you are experiencing. I would love to come make you a cup of tea and just sit with you.” Take notice this week how you feel when someone around you has negative emotions. Make a point to enter in.
